I stumbled across Shakes and Fidget, a web comic dedicated to World of Warcraft. Not much good for American audiences however—it’s written in German. But the page from which I reached it contained pleas for an English version, so I figured it must be good. As it happens, I took German in high school and college, so, with a little help from something like Babelfish to patch over holes in my vocabulary, I figured I could wade through it.
Not bad, but not remarkable, either. I’m struck by how similar it is to several similar strips in English, with somewhat better illustration than average. It’s got all the same jokes as all the other strips, taken in a slightly different order. You’ve got the joke about where monsters store their loot, the joke about the wizard saving himself with a feather-fall spell from death by impact only to descend gently into a volcano, the joke about intimidating hordies who prove just as scared of our heroes as the heroes are of the monsters, the joke about transforming a friend into a sheep to shut him up… All the low-hanging fruit.
So I can’t recommend the strip particularly, but I’m still enjoying it, for all the wrong reasons. Exercising long-atrophied verbal muscles is thoroughly enjoyable.
