Schadenfreude

When I learned of Ted Stevens’ death in a plane crash, my immediate reaction was to wonder why this couldn’t have happened sooner, before he helped wreck the country’s economy, military, freedoms, and dignity in exchange for some budgetary pork. It was an ungracious thought, and I was immediately ashamed to have it. The fact that I could recognize the urge as ungracious and feel shame over it still leaves a fair distance between me and, say, Teabaggers who openly cheer the deaths of their political foes, and even pray that God murder them to preserve lower taxes…but perhaps I can see their houses from here.
